Communicating the value of Sumo Logic in EMEA

Sumo Spotlight - Colin Fernandes
Sumo Spotlight highlights Sumo Logic employees from around the globe. This spotlight features Colin Fernandes, Senior Director of Global Market Development based in Amsterdam.

Describe your role at Sumo Logic

I create compelling SEO, marketing messages and content for our go-to-market solution campaigns across the globe. In addition, I help support field marketing activities, as well as the EMEA sales team to inspire, drive and grow business. I’ve been with the company for nearly five years and it’s been exciting to see the EMEA region evolve, grow and expand into a high-performing, high-growth engine to help make a difference with our customers and partners.

What do you like most about your job?

I am curious by nature and have always been fascinated with how technology works. Since my journey in the tech industry started 35 years ago, I’ve learned a lot and have seen its face change many times – from mainframe to distributed management to virtual to cloud-native. What I like about my job is that I can satisfy my curiosity and use my insights and experience in IT, to help communicate the value of our platform to our field and customers from a marketing perspective.

What parts of our mission and/or values do you most connect with?

We have a strong heritage as a pure SaaS company, and I firmly believe that Sumo Logic is very well positioned to achieve our mission of being the leading SaaS analytics platform for reliable and secure cloud-native apps. Unlike our competitors, we know what it takes to build and run reliable and secure digital services in a cloud-native world, and we deliver on this promise.

From a company values perspective, “We’re in it with our customers” is a company value close to my heart because we walk the talk. It doesn’t matter who touches a customer across the company - sales, customer success, marketing - we are aligned in building deeply meaningful relationships and are often praised for how well we support our customers by going the extra mile.

What did you do before coming to Sumo Logic?

Before Sumo Logic, I worked for VMware for eight years and feel fortunate that I worked with some truly ground-breaking technology. I started out in an enablement role in VMware’s management business unit and am proud to have helped grow the business significantly, to over $1 billion in revenue.

From there I moved to VMware’s telco group in a marketing development role and helped them establish a leading position in the market for network function virtualization software. Before VMware, I worked for a variety of companies including HP/Mercury, Oracle/ATG, IBM/Tivoli, and Compuware in a variety of roles ranging from presales to enablement to marketing, but always in operations management.

It doesn’t matter who touches a customer across the company - sales, customer success, marketing - we are aligned in building deeply meaningful relationships.

What have been your proudest accomplishments while at Sumo Logic?

Earlier this year I organized a sales kickoff event for our EMEA team. It had been nearly two years since we had gathered as a team, and because the COVID-19 lockdown measures had just been lifted, we jumped at the opportunity to bring everyone together to bond after such a long time. I am also proud to have collaborated with many of our customers in the EMEA region, as I learn so much through their success stories and innovation.

What do you think is the biggest opportunity for Sumo Logic in the EMEA region?

The demand for digital experiences across the globe has driven the need for critical cloud-native apps to drive these experiences and really represents why Sumo Logic is so essential. Our ability to deliver reliable and secure digital experiences through a cloud-native SaaS platform helps us to optimize, scale and grow quickly with our ever-expanding partner ecosystem and customers across EMEA.

Name a role model or person who inspires you

Beyonce Knowles is a powerhouse and inspires me to ‘be alive’! She holds true to herself, sets high standards and lives up to them. Full of energy, she is the queen of reinvention. She fights hard and has achieved incredible things for herself and by empowering others.

What do you like to do for fun outside work?

I like to cook, eat and travel! One of my specialties is lobster with coriander-infused oil.

Share one thing that your co-workers don’t know about you.

Most people know that I like a good laugh. What most people don’t know is that when my family first settled in London and left my Kenyan roots behind the (in)famous ‘Carry On’ movies masterminded by Kenneth Williams not only made me laugh a lot but also gave me a sense of home in a new and strange country. Years later, when I worked for ICL, I got to work with Pat, his sister! Like him, she was very funny!
